Like snapshots of life, these small paintings become a narrative
Once I had a Polaroid camera. Every picture became perfectly framed with this magic camera. The instant it would spit out an image was exciting. Then the world got smart phones. It became even easier to take photos instantly, perfectly.
Recently I began painting very small images from my own smart phone’s internal “film roll” . As these paintings took form I began to store them in a binder. Suddenly it was clear.. I had a “photo album” of paintings only 3″x4″ more or less. Each painted by hand over the course of 1-5 hours, the instant made lengthy, technology aiding in the traditional mode of capturing a moment. To add to this experience, I’m now working with gouache, a traditional paint choice of illustrators which has a nostalgic quality I admire.
